Career
My career in the technology field was a wild ride but began in a somewhat expected fashion. After starting my career at Arthur Andersen in the late 80s and early 90s, I moved to Van Kampen Funds, a subsidiary of Morgan Stanley, where I used early adaptive methods to define and build new software products and to migrate off their legacy systems. Following that, I joined a private startup consulting firm of 40 employees. As IT Director, I helped it grow to a global public company of 1,700.
The wild ride began in 2008 when, during the economic downturn, I took three month off for a "walkabout" to clear my head. The path took me through Nevada, California, Montana, New Mexico, then a jump to Guatemala and Nicaragua. On a boat in Lake Nicaragua, I met an interesting man and the owner of two startups in Silicon Valley. One month later, he became my first client... and Fast Frontier was born. I began collaborating with industry experts to scale Lean and Agile software development principles and practices.
In 2011, I partnered with Dean Leffingwell to publish the first publicly available version of the Scaled Agile Framework and to create the supporting services organization, Scaled Agile Partners. In 2012, we cofounded the Scaled Agile Academy, a training and certification organization to help consulting partners apply the Scaled Agile Framework to their client's business context. Following that, we reincorporated as Scaled Agile, Inc. to positively impacted the lives of millions of knowledge workers who build the world's most important systems.
I wound down my professional career in late 2025 when I was awarded the SAFe Fellow Emiritus status at the 2025 global SAFe Summit conference with longtime friend and colleague, Jennifer Fawcett.
